Dr. Garwe is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and has been a faculty member at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) since 2010. She also holds a dual appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery (OUHSC). Prior to joining OUHSC, she was the lead epidemiologist and State Trauma Registrar for the Oklahoma State Department of Health, Emergency Systems Division for 9 years. She is the Director of Surgical Outcomes in the Department of Surgery, as well as an Associate Director for the Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources (OSTCR), Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Unit. Her independent research work is patient-oriented with a particular focus on geriatric trauma triage and outcomes. Dr. Garwe has over 40 publications in the area of trauma and surgical outcomes, both as an independent researcher and as a collaborator. In terms of teaching, Dr. Garwe has taught 6 different courses across multiple semesters since joining the department; her current primary rotation of classes includes Principles of Epidemiology, Intermediate Epidemiologic Methods, and Methods in Clinical Epidemiology (MCE). She developed the MCE course, an advanced methodologic course with computing. The course covers innovative application of methods (e.g., propensity score and instrumental variables modeling) and other topics (e.g., clinical decision analysis and risk score development in clinical research).
