Laura A. Beebe, PhD, MPH is a tenured Professor of Epidemiology and previous Chair of the Department. She has nearly 25 years of experience conducting research and evaluation with tobacco control programs, cancer health disparities, and working with American Indian tribes. She has a record of NIH and state-funded research, and has led the research and evaluation cores for a number of research centers. Dr. Beebe regularly teaches graduate courses in the principles of epidemiology, public health strategies for tobacco control, and grant writing. She has mentored many graduate students and junior faculty. Her accomplishments as a mentor are evidenced by the large number of student and mentee-authored manuscripts and presentations. Dr. Beebe has received numerous awards, notably the OUHSC Magarian Award for outstanding teaching, mentorship, and support of students and the President’s Associates Presidential Professorship.

Clinical/Research Interests:

  • Principal Investigator, Evaluation of TSET-Funded Programs:  The Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology serves as the external evaluator for tobacco control and obesity prevention programs funded by the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust.  These include comprehensive community-based programs, the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline, specific population grants, and counter-marketing campaigns
  • Co-Investigator, “Elucidating Minority Stress Influences on Tobacco Use at the Intersection of Sexual Orientation and Rurality” funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (R01DA059480, PI: Katelyn Romm). This study seeks to identify mechanisms contributing to tobacco use among sexual minority (SM) individuals to inform targeted tobacco prevention and cessation efforts.
  • Tobacco/nicotine product surveillance including the Oklahoma Adult Tobacco Survey, the Oklahoma Youth Tobacco Survey, and an audit of the tobacco retailer landscape.
  • Evaluation of the Oklahoma HealthCare Authority’s SoonerCare program to promote smoking cessation and obesity prevention lifestyle changes among Medicaid members.
